In the pastoral Statement, the U.S. Bishops present a portrait of the rapidly growing Asian and Pacific American communties and reflect on their contributions to the Church as well as their pastoral needs and concerns. Building on John Paul II's "The Church in Asia" and their recent statement, "Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity", the bishops celebrate the diversity of homelands, languages, religions, and ecclesial experiences of Asian and Pacific Americans. They also identify some of the cultural gifts that Asian and Pacific Americans bring to the Church, including the value placed on harmony, family, education, spirituality and religiosity, and a long tradition of lay leadership. The statement offers national, diocesan, and parish-level leaders seven stragedies to more fully support the continue growth and maturing of the Asian and Pacific communities with the Church.
