Asian Pacific Ministry at 1201 E. Highland Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92404 US - San Lorenzo Ruiz

San Lorenzo Ruiz

Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized and declared "Saint" on October 18, 1987, six years after his proclamation as "blessed" by His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his February 1981 visit to the Philippines.

Being the first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruizhigh sense of spirituality bespeaks of his worthiness to this uncommon and distinct title. As a youth, his spiritual growth was nourished, among others, by his active membership in the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and his intense desire to learn catechism. This was evidenced by consistently serving as sacristan at the Binondo Church, then shepherded by Dominican priests who provided him a living acquaintance with the Spanish language. Capable of articulating this particular language, Lorenzo later earned for himself the label "Escribano" or Scribe.

In 1636, equipped with strong and inherent love of God, he sailed with some Dominican missionaries to Japan where persecution of Christians was done on a wide scale.

"Hanging in the pit" was a capital punishment for Christians that did not spare Lorenzo. He stood firm in refusing to renounce his Faith with these unrelenting words, "I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian even to the point of death. Only to God will I offer my life. If I had a thousand lives, I would still offer them to Him." As a result, on September 23, 1637, he was tortured until he died, glorifying God.

San Lorenzo Ruiz, whose parents were practicing Catholics, was born during the early part of the 17th century, in Binondo, Manila, married and blessed with three children.

Massive veneration of the Saints through scheduled novena prayers takes place in the Philippines, especially on September 28, his feast day. Devotees increase in number even in foreign land where Filipino communities abound.
