San Lorenzo Ruiz |
Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized and declared "Saint" on October 18, 1987, six years after his proclamation as "blessed" by His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his February 1981 visit to the Philippines. Being the first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz
In 1636, equipped with strong and inherent love of God, he sailed with some Dominican missionaries to Japan where persecution of Christians was done on a wide scale.
"Hanging in the pit" was a capital punishment for Christians that did not spare Lorenzo. He stood firm in refusing to renounce his Faith with these unrelenting words, "I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian even to the point of death. Only to God will I offer my life. If I had a thousand lives, I would still offer them to Him." As a result, on September 23, 1637, he was tortured until he died, glorifying God.
San Lorenzo Ruiz, whose parents were practicing Catholics, was born during the early part of the 17th century, in Binondo, Manila, married and blessed with three children.
Massive veneration of the Saints through scheduled novena prayers takes place in the Philippines, especially on September 28, his feast day. Devotees increase in number even in foreign land where Filipino communities abound.
